We have known each other for quite some time, and I was delighted in my new position to be reminded of your enduring commitments—to students, to great journalism, and to causes that matter in the workplace. I see that you had written the Chancellery about your Moveon.org petition to support the New York State Healthy Workplace Bill, and that you are calling for CUNY to be a “leader in promoting healthy workplaces.” From my new position in the Central Office, I am very pleased to assure that CUNY is already a strong advocate for safe workplaces and has put policies, procedures (e.g., requiring annual workplace violence training for all CUNY employees, Workplace Violence Prevention Training Administrators at all CUNY campuses and the central office) and resources, (eg and) in place to ensure that CUNY is a safe environment for its students and employees.
Gregg, please know that we take the matter of safe workplaces very seriously, in practice and spirit as well as in policy, as I know you do. I wish you every success always.
Sincerely,
Vita
Vita C. Rabinowitz
Executive Vice Chancellor and University Provost
The City University of New York

Minding the Workplace: When Meetings Are Used to Reinforce Pre-Existing Hierarchies and Exclusionary Patterns
Thursday, April 12th, 2018Professor David Yamada writes that, after 27 years in academe, he has “come to understand that the most morale-killing misuse of meetings is to reinforce pre-existing hierarchies and exclusionary patterns.” This sounds very familiar to this writer-blogger. Very familiar. Click here for full Minding the Workplace column.
