The Voice of Hunter College Since 1944? Oh, Please!

Part 1 of 4:

Below is a message I posted on Hunter-L early in the semester regarding a cheap shot by Editor in Chief Ming Fearon, who is at the top of the food chain for a Hunter student publication that purports to be “the voice of Hunter College since 1944.”

The Obama Conference Call With the WORD and Other Student News Organizations: A Missed Opportunity

Monday, October 4th, 2010

By Jonathan Mena

As I sat listening to Obama’s phone conference call with the WORD and 114 other student journalism organizations last week, I wondered if any of my other student journalism colleagues from around the country were ready to bite his head off (figuratively speaking, of course) with tough questions. Sadly, only three were selected – perhaps, dare I say, pre-selected — and they seemed trapped in the Obama vortex and were star struck, to say the least. The representatives of the age groups that got recognitions for coming together and helping the President trounce McCain, failed to take a risk and grill him.

Jonathan Mena, a former WORD Senior Editor-Producer, posting information on Facebook during the September 27, 2010, conference call. ICIT's Distance Learning, for whom Mena now works, made possible the WORD's participation. Mena is officially graduates this semester.

UWIRE.com Dead

Wednesday, October 28th, 2009

It was sold and the deal has been cloaked in secrecy. It stopped publishing in mid September. It boasted a membership of college news services that spanned the country and had members over seas. Should anyone care about the demise of a national student news organization?

From: Michelle Starr
News Editor | UWIRE
www.uwire.com

I’m really sorry to send so many messages out in the last few days, but it’s the start of the semester and pretty crazy. UWIRE is trying to compile a list of weird classes and we’re hoping all of you can help out. Are there any new, interesting, strange classes this fall…Think “Harry Potter and British Comedy” or something like that. As always we’ll make it available to anyone who pitches in!

Sharpton Redux [Instructor Eats Crow]

Wednesday, May 27th, 2009
Feature Writing, Spring 2009.

Feature Writing, Spring 2009.

Email sent to my Feature Writing students after the Thursday, April 30 class:
Andrea Leon convinced me that I missed the big picture and that she has a story that no journalist, pro or student (in recent memory), has regarding Sharpton. So, I would really appreciate it if everyone in class would send her three or four sentences regarding their likes and dislikes about Sharpton. Try to be specific about why you like or don’t like or respect or disrespect about him.

Please let her know if you can use your name or not in this special she’s working on.

For pedagogical reasons, I will offer a brief recap and opinion at the beginning of class because the tiff illustrates some journalistic matters that can’t be taught via book/class and have to be learned via real-world experience.

Thanks,

gm

Inauguration Update: Must See Video

Tuesday, January 20th, 2009

By Senior Producer/Editor Jacqueline Fernandez (With Technical Assistance from Jonathan Mena)

Today (Monday, January 19) — Jonathan Mena and I got a call from our colleague Luis Mostacero that there might be a chance for us to get press credentials to attend the Inauguration of Barack Obama. The challenged: Jonathan and I had to dash through congested, convoluted Washington D.C. traffic to make it to the Russell Senate Office Building in 30 minutes– or else!

See Them Run!

Follow-up: “A Victory for Student Journalism at the City University of New York”

Tuesday, December 2nd, 2008

Activist Attorney Ronald B. McGuire follows up an earlier email to his “Community List” regarding a federal court ruling against a former President of City College found guilty of violating the First Amendment rights of a student editor.

December 1 — Youngbloods, Elders and Friends:

Today’s edition of the New York Law Journal (NYLJ) features a front page article reporting a federal judge’s decision to hold former City College President Yolanda Moses liable in a civil rights lawsuit brought by three former City College student activists who worked at the Guillermo Morales/Assata Shakur Community and Student Center at City College.

Excerpts from today’s NYLJ article on the Sigal v. Moses decision are reprinted below.

Jonathan Mena & Jacqueline Fernandez With NAM – Uh Oh!

Sunday, November 16th, 2008

This is amusing. After reviewing and then publishing on the WORD their Youtube production about the gay rights rally in New York City November 15,  I told Jonathan Mena & Jacqueline Fernandez that they were doing too much breaking news and that they should focus on more in-depth stuff for their YouTube broacasts (and for their portfolios).

And guess what? New America Media put their production efforts on its front page.* This is exciting. I, with several years of journalism experience and two books and tons of related experience, told two student journalists that I thought what they did was good but they could do better and NAM decides what they did was front-page news.

I love it.

And will address “it” in subsequent posts.

*This hit NAM’s first page November 16. By tomorrow, it might be in the archives.
