Jimmy Carter. Jimmy Carter. Jimmy Carter.

September 18th, 2009

Said what was needed to be said no matter what the right of center, far right and fringe right have to say and bitch (as news media, pundits, whatever) about what he said. Like the New York Daily News – the only major urban daily ever to lose a federal discrimination lawsuit because of the way it treated its journalists of color – said what was to be expected, it’s headline: “Jerky Jimmy’s junk: Carter’s cries of racism are both wrong and destructive.” [Destructive?!?]

Commute, the Assignment

September 14th, 2009

Students in feature writing have to produce a “Commute” as the final assignment, a journalistic narrative about their commuting to and from the campus for the semester. Words and pictures. The instructor has been warming up for this assignment also. And two encounters on the subway indicate his reflexes need to be revived.

Ed Kent: The Real Unemployment Rate

September 7th, 2009

Kent is a retired Brooklyn College philosophy professor who writes for a number of yahoo groups (which I believe he started). The following is from his OurStupidEconomy@yahoogroups.com:

I mentioned in a recent blog the contrast between other nations that report the real numbers out of work and our reporting only those who have been searching for jobs recently. This discrepancy completely distorts any comparison in the progress of national economies.

Van Jones Shouldn’t Have Resigned Nor Apologized

September 6th, 2009

Jones, President Barack Obama’s appointed advisor on “green jobs,” resigned in the wake of incendiary ranting from rabid right-wing news types like Glenn Beck about Jones’ statements regarding Republicans and his signing a 2004 letter suggesting that former President George W. Bush might have knowingly allowed the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks to occur in order to use them to go to war.

The Slowest of a Slow News Day Can Sometimes Compel Desperate Measures

September 5th, 2009

Some days the mainstream news media hurt for news. No murders/violence of sufficient import to headline; same for traffic accidents, celebrity sitings as well as man-bites-dog, dog-bites-man-who-bites-dog-that-snuffs-kitty and, a rare one, kitty-fights-back-eating-man-and-dog. In desperation they bite the bullet as the New York Daily News did about the hungry man in Florida.

Right Wing Attacks on Unions

September 4th, 2009

From Abby Scher, Editorial Director, The Public Eye Magazine, about two upcoming radio shows on National Radio Project and WBAI.

I’ve been tracking anti-union campaigns from the Right and did a short radio documentary for Making Contact being broadcast this week about the Right’s misinformation campaign to stop labor law reform this year. They are going all out. Unions are a potent reality check. People in unions don’t tend to fall for a lot of the free market mythology about how the world works.
