Ethnic Media Expand Audience by 8 Million Adults in Four Years; Outlets Now Reach 57 Million Blacks, Latinos And Asians

Thursday, June 11th, 2009

Definitely must reading, the report below. Also, the New American Media news site should be checked out as religiously as the savant check out the New York Times.

From New America Media

ATLANTA – Over the last four years, the ethnic media have picked up 8 million new readers, viewers and listeners, and now regularly reach 57 million people in the United States, according to a poll released today by New America Media (NAM). The increase comes as mainstream media, especially metropolitan daily newspapers, struggle to keep their audiences.

New America Media Ethnic Media Expo & Awards, Atlanta, June 4-5, 2009

WORD writer Eunji Jang  is in Atlanta. The WORD editor ain’t there cause of a bicycle accident. If Jang isn’t overwhelmed by a lot of work – she’s working on project drawing on her fluency in Korean plus manning a table with pamphlets about Hunter as well as pursuing her own projects – she might deliver some updates or news about the expo.

New America Media National Ethnic Media Award Winners

Thursday, May 28th, 2009

This is a quickie alert because I’m trying to wrap up my semester and have been waylaid with last minute stuff. More later about NAM and its June 4-5 convention. Needless to say, NAM – thanks to Jonathan Mena, Kisha Allison, Jacqueline Fernandez and Eunji Jang – really admires Hunter students and does a lot to support them.

On with the quickie:

The WORD at the 2009 Swearing-in of President-Elect Barack Obama

Sunday, January 18th, 2009

Luis Mostacero, Jacqueline Fernandez and Jonathan Mena are heading to the Presidential Inauguration TODAY to make sure they’re in D.C. to engage this historic moment before the anticipated humungous surge inspires The Powers That Be to cut off transportation into the city. A sudden emergency is keeping Kisha Allison from going.

Mostacero has press credentials via his Noticia Hispanoamericana – but also will be writing for the WORD.

Letter to an Editor, New America Media

Monday, November 17th, 2008

This is a copy of an email I sent to NAM yesterday, regarding its publishing of two news videos produced by my senior editors, senior producers Jonathan Mena and Jacqueline Fernandez, about the gay rights protest rally at NYC City Hall.

Hi,

Just a note regarding my student senior editors-senior producers’ video that NAM graciously noted on its front page November 16. The “Word” is actually spelled, uppercase, WORD and it is not an official part of my department’s journalism program.

Jonathan Mena & Jacqueline Fernandez With NAM – Uh Oh!

Sunday, November 16th, 2008

This is amusing. After reviewing and then publishing on the WORD their Youtube production about the gay rights rally in New York City November 15,  I told Jonathan Mena & Jacqueline Fernandez that they were doing too much breaking news and that they should focus on more in-depth stuff for their YouTube broacasts (and for their portfolios).

And guess what? New America Media put their production efforts on its front page.* This is exciting. I, with several years of journalism experience and two books and tons of related experience, told two student journalists that I thought what they did was good but they could do better and NAM decides what they did was front-page news.

I love it.

And will address “it” in subsequent posts.

*This hit NAM’s first page November 16. By tomorrow, it might be in the archives.
