Response on Hunter-L to Colleague Larry Shore’s Hunter-L Whining About Alleged Violation of Listserv Rules

Sunday, March 9th, 2014

Posted by me on Hunter-L Thursday, March 6:

I’m told by a H-L Honcho that my post is in violation. I’ve requested a meeting. But I have to say this to the list:

1) It’s absolutely silly that I can’t mention the name of a prominent public figure, the Hunter College PSC Chapter Chair, conducting a very public jihad, apparently using whatever means she believes is at her disposal, including Hunter-L (such as linking to the Chronicle of Higher Ed). See this other link to a WORD news story for context, reference: http://hunterword.com/articles/1572  (Postmortem: The Children’s Learning Center Debacle).

Regarding this PSC Chapter Chair vs. Hunter College President, or PSC Chapter Chair Barbara Bowen Proxy vs. Hunter College President, it should be obvious that this is more than a domestic D:F/M matter AKA “department politics,” which supposedly can’t be recognized, addressed nor criticized on this listserv even though the rancor has moved beyond department and campus boundaries. It’s approaching critical mass.

2) As for “department politics:” In a meeting a while back with the Provost, I was told that the administration was concerned about the image of the department. At one point in that long meeting, I was told to contact the Acting Dean of Diversity and Compliance, and together he and I were to contact the CUNY Dispute Resolution Center (http://johnjayresearch.org/cdrc/). Note: There are Colleagues who have said at department meetings that there is no rancor and no concern on the part of the Administration.

The rest is in the attachment.

Brett A. Scudder is so good and savvy and has helped so many people … that I sometimes like to imagine that he could walk on water if he wasn’t so busy helping others.

I am sending this logo/icon out everywhere, especially using social media for the press release by the New York State Healthy Workplace Advocates. The press release got a nice ride in a journalism/media column written by Richard Prince of the Maynard Institute. Click here for Prince’s Short Takes where he mentions the WORD.

D:F/M Colleague Larry Shore: The Plot Thickens – Part 2

Wednesday, February 26th, 2014

Colleague Shore’s full response is in the earlier blog post here. This writer’s response is below. A version is being readied for the College’s Hunter-L Listserv. A shorten version of Colleague Shore’s comments is at the end of this blog.

Topics of interest to the Hunter College community [HUNTER-L@HUNTER.LISTSERV.CUNY.EDU] …

To the List:

No Hunter-L habitué appreciates the comments of Colleague Larry Shore as I do. Absolutely no one. I’ve told him that many times (okay, more like conveyed to him in emails since we stopped talking collegially several years ago when he was Chair of the D:F/M Grade Appeals Committee).

Clarification: I don’t create the scandals. I write ONLY about the ones that interfere with my teaching, classroom responsibilities and my personal and professional interests, such as bogus Violence in the Workplace complaints. That statement might sound litigiously ominous but it is what it is.

Nevertheless, thanks to the List for its patience during these daunting, troubling, challenging and irascible times regarding the scope and direction of undergraduate media, media studies and journalism at Hunter which, in my opinion, extend beyond the proprietary boundaries of one department.

Best,
Gregg Morris

Vetted for Hunter-L. No sarcasm intended.
