Dear Hunter students + staff:
I’m trying to get the word out about The Envoy, Hunter College’s print newspaper.
The complete lament of the Envoy Editor-in-Chief rests at the end of this post. In between this sentence and that lament is a succinct accounting of student journalism at the College and undergraduate journalism in D:F/M, both waddling in a bad states of affairs.
Student journalism and subsequently D:F/M undergraduate journalism were hijacked many years ago, dumped in a septic tank of woe, essentially for students serious about journalism as a career or interest. It didn’t have to be that way.

The short version:
Before hunterword.com there was theword.hunter.cuny.edu and early on with the latter there were Alieu Sheriff and Rodney Sieh, who, as teens, had been chased out of, first, Gambia, then Liberia because of their news critical of government practices and policies. For her journalistic work with New York Times Reporter Kirk Semple for “Suicides Soar Among New York Koreans,” Jang, who speaks and writes fluent Korean, and interns for New America Media, earned a Contributing Tag at the end of the story.
NYT news lead for the double suicide of Yongho and Soonhee Kim, February 25, 2008:
They had navigated the move from South Korea and opened a nail salon on Long Island, but by last winter, Yongho and Soonhee Kim were in debt and deeply unhappy. They were fighting a lawsuit over nonpayment of rent on the Long Beach salon and were months behind on rent payments for their apartment in Oakland Gardens, Queens. The bank had repossessed their car.

At dawn on Feb. 25, the couple left a note for their 20-year-old daughter outside their apartment door, doused themselves with gasoline and set themselves on fire, the police said. The blaze killed them and destroyed their home.
“They 100 percent lost hope,†said Mr. Kim’s brother-in-law, Chi Kun Park.
An earlier story was published/broadcast by NAM in July. NAM’s Odette Keely interviewed Jang about a piece that the Korean Times in NYC wrote about Korean suicides in America.

New York City – Reminiscent of this past September’s New York Democratic Primary, low voter turnout is expected for today’s Mayoral race. News outlets in New York have been giving more attention to the Governors race in Jersey than the Mayors race in New York. Although Thompson is gaining on the Billionaire Mayor, according to news and polling information, he will need a Hail Mary toss to beat Bloomberg and his double-digit lead.

This former Newsday Middle East bureau chief is a former student of mine who is an Adjunct Senior Fellow for Middle Eastern Studies at the Council on Foreign Relations and is also an assistant professor at NYU. I came across his keynote 2009 speech at the City University of New York Baccalaureate Commencement exercise while researching the Do Not Remove Any Documents!!! project. He told the assembled students and families and friends great war stories.
But I know of two he didn’t discuss about his experiences as an undergraduate student journalist who was paying his way through college with freelance fees earned at Newsday as well as with journalism scholarship and award money he had won. He often tipped me off so that I could clue other student journalists trying to jumpstart their careers while working their way through Hunter.
[It’s easy to say that he has contributed to the journalism experiences and careers of Hunter students more than many if any of my colleagues in D:F/M.]
All of his war stories – those told at the commencement and the two that I describe below – attest to his remarkable aplomb in the face of adversity.

So, yesterday, Thursday, in my feature writing class which I’m trying to develop into a in-depth reporting class, I decided about 15 minutes before the appointed hour for what was suppose to be a walkout of students around the campus, to give an assignment, which required the class to go check out the rally.
