From MSNBC: BANGKOK – Thailand’s army designated a riot-wracked neighborhood in central Bangkok as a “live firing zone” Saturday, as streets in the Asian metropolis became battlegrounds and authorities struggled to contain Red Shirt demonstrators demanding the prime minister’s resignation.

Howard Monath Amazing, according to this story, the Red Shirt general, Seh Deang who was shot in the head by a sniper was set up.. A second after a video camera started rolling, and the camera light clearly illuminated his face, he was shot in the forehead by a sniper from one of the nearby towers.

NY Times Headline, May 15, 8;13 A.M.:Thai Army Cites ‘Live Fire Zone’ as Clashes Continue
Lead: BANGKOK — The Thai military declared a neighborhood of Bangkok a “live-fire zone” on Saturday and said it was calling in reinforcements as fighting spread to several areas in the city and the death toll in a three-day offensive against anti-government protesters rose to 17. Thai Premier Rescinds Offer for Early Election: Spokesman – WSJ.com, online.wsj.com, Thailand’s prime minister said he would no longer offer antigovernment protesters a compromise, including an early election, reducing chances that a negotiated settlement to the two-month political standoff would be found.

The Red Shirts just announced that they will only disband if the deputy prime minister agrees to face criminal charges relating to the April 10th death of 20 civilians…like that’s ever going to happen. this does not bode well for a peaceful resolution.

Peter Hart writes, “We noted last week that the PBS NewsHour’s coverage of the Gulf oil disaster one night included a one-on-one interview with a spokesperson from BP. Going through the show’s coverage since then, a remarkable fact emerged: The show had not interviewed an environmental advocate opposed to the White House plan to increase offshore oil drilling. The reticence to talk about this obvious policy angle was bizarre – though not at all limited to PBS.”
