Q: Want to wrap up?

A: Let me write a wrap-up in a few days (middle of week or so). The curfew ends today, I can start going out to talk to a few people. A lot of  ‘experts’ expect this to turn into a series of guerilla attacks , but now there is a very uneasy calm. Also, the Thai government has been arresting foreigners who they say were “outside agitators.” One English bloke is facing a possible death penalty for ‘exhorting’ the crowd to burn down the Central World Mall.

[10:47 P.M. Update: “The fires are still burning in Bangkok, things are pretty brazen; a lot of the crowds seem to support the Reds who slip in and out with impunity, This is civil war, people who are on different sides live in the same block. The elderly and children have gone to the Temples which have been declared sanctuaries by the Thai government, but at night the Red Shirt fighters use the temples has havens.”]

Howard Monath I’m alive…yeah snipers were shooting at us, crawling around on the ground not knowing from what building the bullets are coming from..and then realizing that I’m wearing an ORANGE HAT, AND I’M HALF A FOOT TALLER THAN THE PEOPLE AROUND ME!…it’s terrifying. I’m bailing for a while, it’s complete chaos, no street lights….tear gas; this is civil war

The Red Shirts just announced that they will only disband if the deputy prime minister agrees to face criminal charges relating to the April 10th death of 20 civilians…like that’s ever going to happen. this does not bode well for a peaceful resolution.

Another Update From Filmmaker Howard Monath in Bangkok

Wednesday, April 28th, 2010

Via facebook about 9 minutes ago [about 11:55 p.m.].

Things are getting pretty rank at the Red Shirt encampment here in Bangkok. Seven weeks of garbage is piling up, portable toilets have backed up, and in the constant 100 degree heat the stench is becoming unbearable; people are getting sick. The Reds have doused their tire barricades with gasoline and vow to stay…

Howard Monath in Bangkok & Reporting for the WORD

Reported via facebook. Well. The ‘Red Shirts’ here are no longer wearing their red shirts. Strategically this makes some sense, but you have to wonder if the ‘Reds’ are doing to themselves what the army and the Thai government so far haven’t been able to do to them.

” Oh, and I just got back from the center of all this; it was a very surreal day, the leaders of the Red Shirts, the guys you see on TV every day, were talking to each other; they came over and asked me what I thought was gong to happen! (bizarre, there were no other foreigners/journalists around )  the army has given them 48 hours to leave. the Red Shirts have completely taken over about two miles of downtown Bangkok, and are amazingly organized, pretty good for a bunch of illiterate farmers.
