Q: Want to wrap up?
A: Let me write a wrap-up in a few days (middle of week or so). The curfew ends today, I can start going out to talk to a few people. A lot of ‘experts’ expect this to turn into a series of guerilla attacks , but now there is a very uneasy calm. Also, the Thai government has been arresting foreigners who they say were “outside agitators.” One English bloke is facing a possible death penalty for ‘exhorting’ the crowd to burn down the Central World Mall.

Update: “The fires are still burning in Bangkok, things are pretty brazen; a lot of the crowds seem to support the Reds who slip in and out with impunity, This is civil war, people who are on different sides live in the same block. The elderly and children have gone to the Temples which have been declared sanctuaries by the Thai government, but at night the Red Shirt fighters use the temples has havens.”]

NY Times Headline, May 15, 8;13 A.M.:Thai Army Cites ‘Live Fire Zone’ as Clashes Continue
Lead: BANGKOK — The Thai military declared a neighborhood of Bangkok a “live-fire zone” on Saturday and said it was calling in reinforcements as fighting spread to several areas in the city and the death toll in a three-day offensive against anti-government protesters rose to 17. Howard Monath I’m alive…yeah snipers were shooting at us, crawling around on the ground not knowing from what building the bullets are coming from..and then realizing that I’m wearing an ORANGE HAT, AND I’M HALF A FOOT TALLER THAN THE PEOPLE AROUND ME!…it’s terrifying. I’m bailing for a while, it’s complete chaos, no street lights….tear gas; this is civil war

Thai Premier Rescinds Offer for Early Election: Spokesman – WSJ.com, online.wsj.com, Thailand’s prime minister said he would no longer offer antigovernment protesters a compromise, including an early election, reducing chances that a negotiated settlement to the two-month political standoff would be found.

The Red Shirts just announced that they will only disband if the deputy prime minister agrees to face criminal charges relating to the April 10th death of 20 civilians…like that’s ever going to happen. this does not bode well for a peaceful resolution.

BBC America, 15 minutes ago [about 6 p.m., EST], said that the Red Shirts were mulling over an offer but were not enthusiastic about the November elections that the Prime Minister pitched to them.
