I will be writing a lot about the Democratic Convention even though it ended August 28 and the Republican event is about to begin. There was so much going on and I’m not just referring to the political wheeling and dealing and the pageantry. I’m going to provide a kind of behind-the-scenes look. Journalism technology, for example, was on awesome display.
My students did really, really well writing and blogging and broadcasting and podcasting. Two even “finessed” their way on to the floor of the Pepsi Center where they did live broadcasting via blogtv.
For my students and me, it was an exciting and invaluable trip made possible by New America Media. They learned so much. And one of the benefits was that they hung out with professional journalists and were treated like professional journalists and they watched and listened and observe. There’s only so much that can be taught or learned in a classroom and this trip was a transcendental. I’m already imagining ways to revise how I teach journalism.
I would have liked to have spent more time with my students. I’m not sure how Kisha Allison, Jonathan Mena and Jacqueline Fernandez (below) feel about that. Perhaps for them, less meant more. Â I had become wrapped up in helping with logistics supporting the correspondents selected by New America Media. I have no regrets, however.
