Students Evaluate Their Instructors

Sunday, January 13th, 2013

I engage my students throughout the semester so I usually have an idea how they might evaluate the class/me. I keep the following in mind: 1) Many resist reading the syllabus, and I get annoyed, waiting for signs that reality is penetrating their resistance, that they’re not following the guidelines and rules that can significantly impact their grades. It is not unusual for students to dare me to flunk them and I do when they don’t clean up their act.

This post was inspired by a recent notice that I could review my students’ evaluations of their classes with me this past semester. See the notice at the end if interested.

… Routinely Making Unconstitutional Street Stops Outside Clean Halls Buildings Across the Bronx

January 8, 2013 — From NYCLU: The NYPD has a pattern and practice of illegally stopping innocent people in public areas outside thousands of private apartment buildings in the Bronx and must immediately end this unconstitutional practice, a U.S. District Court judge ruled this morning.

The victory comes as part of a federal class-action lawsuit filed in March by the New York Civil Liberties Union, The Bronx Defenders, LatinoJustice PRLDEF and the law firm of Shearman & Sterling LLP challenging the NYPD’s enforcement of Operation Clean Halls – a citywide program within the Police Department’s stop-and-frisk regime that allows police officers to patrol in and around certain private apartment buildings.

Could Andrew Sullivan of the Dish Be a Soulmate?

As if he was reading my mind:

When I first stumbled into blogging over 12 years ago, it was for two reasons: curiosity and freedom. I was curious about the potential for writing in this new medium; and for the first time, I felt total freedom as a writer. On my little blog, I was beholden to no one but my readers. I had no editor to please, no advertiser to woo, no publisher to work for, no colleagues to manage. Perhaps it was working for so long in old media that made me appreciate this breakthrough so much. But it still exhilarates every day. [Full Column here]

Fuck Fox, Bring on AL Jazeera

Thursday, January 3rd, 2013

Al Jazeera, financed by the government of Qatar, reportedly purchased Current TV: NYT – Al Jazeera Seeks a U.S. Voice Where Gore Failed: “Going forward, the challenge will be persuading Americans to watch — an extremely tough proposition given the crowded television marketplace and the stereotypes about the channel that persist to this day.” Full NYT Media Decoder story here.
