Journalism in the Age of the Internet: A late report on the symposium February 23 at St. Francis College, Brooklyn, about How the Rise of On-Line Reporting and Commentary Is Transforming the Business of Journalism

Saturday, February 27th, 2010

What about the Profession of Journalism? What about the Practice of Journalism? A report is in the works. Nevertheless, the symposium was lame but Lisa George of Hunter was cool but didn’t say much but what was said was insightful.

More in-depth report in the works.

For Ethnic Communities, a Year of Stimulus Not Enough

Saturday, February 20th, 2010

New America Media, Commentary, Aaron Glantz, Posted: February 20, 2010

It was one year ago that this week that President Obama signed the $787 billion American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, better known as the stimulus package. It’s the biggest investment in our country since the Great Depression, but in this commentary I show how for most of us, a year of stimulus is not enough.

2010: Significant Moments

Thursday, February 11th, 2010

Late December, 2009, and early January, 2010, of course, a period when the mainstream news media were publishing recollections and what they considered the highlights of the decade just passed and taking opportunities to prognosticate about the near and distant future. That’s inspiration to do a review of significant moments in the 10 years of the WORD, and its editor, sans the prognostication. However, mostly highlights are to be considered with substantive reviews to follow when possible (because they can take so much time to write).

NYT Headline: Lawmakers Expel N.Y. State Senator Over Assault

Jeremy W. Peters, February 9: ALBANY — The New York State Senate on Tuesday night expelled a senator convicted of assaulting his companion, the first time a member of the Legislature was forced from office in nearly a century. Full NYT story here.

So: There has been much – research studies as well as news stories – about the corruption suffused in incredible hubris – in Albany. Criminal corruption as well as a withering ethical malaise that has nothing to do with the best interests of constituents. So, to see “them” eat one of their own (in a period when lots of eyes are turned to the shenanigans) almost brings tears to the eyes. Hasta la vista Hiram Monserrate even if there is a chance it won’t be permanent.

Let the feasting get contagious. One down, many to go.

Future of Journalism, Manhattan Institute – Et Al

Tuesday, February 9th, 2010

The institute is organizing a February 23 symposium about the future of journalism in the Internet age. Professor Lisa George, Hunter economics department, who said Hunter President Raab asked her to participate in the symposium, sent a notice to this instructor. George said she will be hosting an academic conference at Hunter’s Roosevelt House October 15, 16 about, tentatively, the impact of technology on markets for news and information.

The Future of Journalism is on a myriad of minds and has been showing up in a myriad of theaters and arenas. The Future of Journalism Education lags.

More than a year ago, this instructor participated in a discussion at the Poynter Institute about the future of journalism. He also participated in a discussion at the McCormick Foundation several weeks before the week-long workshop at Pointer. That discussion was about funding future J-enterprises, thus, The Future of Journalism was a significant part of that discussion. There have been lots of discussions and seminars and mini-docus and workshops showing up on cable and the  Internet.

So, where stands D:F/M? Hope here is that the Duh is not significant. I can’t wait to get started on this thread.

Tea Party Dabbles in Immigration Politics

Sunday, February 7th, 2010

“The Tea Party movement has energized activism against President Obama’s vision for immigration reform. The link between tea partiers and immigration politics developed last summer, when the impact of illegal immigration on the health care system became a prominent side issue in town hall debates. Since then, illegal immigration has steadily gained ground on the Tea Party agenda.” — Article by Marcelo Ballvé for New America Media.
